What Our Participants Say

"Truly enlightening."

UNESCO Staffer

"Absolutely brilliant. The course provided a new lens on how to understand the individuals and groups we serve. It also outlines a strategy to leverage identity and culture material to reduce conflict."

Director of an Arts Foundation

"This training made me realize how much us and them dynamics defined me in the world around me. I'm fascinated, touched, and can't stop thinking about the approach."

Teacher

"By offering methods of better understanding those who are against/in opposition of what I do in my activism, and, hard though it may be, not to simply dismiss them because they are the 'other'. It gave me the tools to think about identity in a structured and practical way. I was able to realize that the conceptual schemes I had been using were too rigid and one-dimensional. I can now name and analyze phenomena and situations with more complexity and nuance."

Activist

"I used it to have stronger ideas and more clear knowledge around identity and conflict resolution. I think I had the methodological part more clear, but not the conceptual area. Made our approach to incorporating identity factors in our (social work) clients far more intentional."

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What makes EMIC different from other methodologies?
EMIC is unique in its comprehensive approach to identity and culture. Rather than treating identity as a fixed category, EMIC views it as a dynamic system that can be mapped, analyzed, and transformed.
How much time should I expect to commit each week?
Each level requires you to attend a minimum of 12x 90-minute sessions before assessment and completion. The pace you attend these is up to you. If you would like to complete in the minimum time possible, we recommend studying an additional 2 hours per week, for a total time commitment of 3.5 hours per week for 12 weeks per level of certification. However, you might decide not to attend every weekly session and spread your learning and practice across a longer period (max 1 year per level).
Can I skip levels if I have relevant experience?
While each case is evaluated individually, we generally recommend completing all levels sequentially. This ensures a solid foundation and progressive skill development. However, experienced practitioners may be eligible for advanced placement after an assessment. Applicants who have attended a three-day OICD workshop may be eligible to begin at Blue Certification after an assessment.
Are there prerequisites for enrollment?
For the Green level, no specific prerequisites are required beyond professional or academic experience in a relevant field. Higher levels require successful completion of previous levels or equivalent demonstrated experience.
What support is available during the program?
Participants receive comprehensive support including regular mentoring sessions, peer learning groups, access to expert practitioners, and technical support for online learning platforms.
Is financial aid available?
Yes, we offer scholarships and flexible payment plans. Additionally, many participants receive support from their employers or organizations. Contact our enrollment team to discuss available options.
What happens after certification?
This EMIC Certification program is an innovative new professional development program. Practitioners will join a small group of pioneering professionals from around the world, receive ongoing support and resources, and can participate in advanced training and research opportunities. We expect that practitioners will go on to lead projects or train others in their organizations.
Is the certification internationally recognized?
EMIC certification will be fully supported by the OICD and its partner organizations and institutions worldwide through certification credentials provided by the OICD - an established organization with many partnerships with universities and larger institutions.
